بنى مجلس النواب العراقي بـ 110 أصوات من أصل 160 حاضرين علما عراقيا جديدا حيث تم الحفاظ على الألوان الثلاث ذات الدلالات الاسلامية في حين تم حذف النجمات الثلاث رمز الوحدة و الاشتراكية و القومية، مبادئ حزب البعث، كما تم تغيير خط عبارة الله أكبر إلى الخط الكوفي بعد أن كانت قد خطّت بيد الرئيس العراقي السابق صدام حسين
The Iraqi Parliamat has approved a new flag for the Republic of Iraq. 110 MPs of the 160 who attended the meeting, have approved a new flag. The three colors will remain, however they removed the three stars which belonged to the Baath party's principles. They
have also decided to change the font of the expression "Allahu Akbar" to the kuffi font, instead of Saddam Hussein's handwritten.
