Although she lost the presidential elections against its rival the new French president Nicolas Sarkozy, Ségolène Royal and her socialist party have another chance to thwart Sarkozy. France will hold legislative elections in the next few months. Any party, other than UMP (President's party) which may win the elections with majority, will form the government and Sarkozy will be obliged to live a cohabitation with the new government which may restrain his plans.
